Edward Gene Rendell: From New York to Pennsylvania's Governor
Birth and EducationEdward Gene Rendell was born in New York City in early 1944 to Jewish parents who had emigrated from Russia. After graduating from Riverdale Country School, he attended the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1965. Rendell then pursued a law degree from Villanova University School of Law, graduating in 1968.
Military Service
From 1968 to 1974, Rendell served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of First Lieutenant.
Political Career
Rendell's political career began in 1977 when he was elected District Attorney of Philadelphia, defeating the incumbent Emmett Fitzpatrick. He successfully emphasized his outsider status in his campaign.
Philadelphia Mayoralty
In 1991, Rendell was elected Mayor of Philadelphia, defeating Republican Joseph M. Egan. During his tenure, he overcame economic challenges, reducing the city's $250 million debt and securing a second term with over 80% of the vote in 1995. His efforts were chronicled in the book "A Prayer for the City," which hailed Philadelphia's turnaround as "the most improbable comeback in the history of American cities."
Pennsylvania Governorship
In 2002, Rendell ran for Governor of Pennsylvania against Democratic primary favorite Bob Casey. Despite winning only 10 of 67 counties in the primary, Rendell prevailed in the general election with 54% of the vote, defeating Republican Mike Fisher. As Governor, he reduced taxes and prioritized education. He was re-elected in 2006, defeating Lynn Swann, a former Pittsburgh Steelers star.
National Recognition
President Barack Obama reportedly considered Rendell for Secretary of Energy in 2008.
Personal Life and Legacy
Rendell is an avid sports fan, often attending Philadelphia Phillies baseball and Philadelphia Eagles football games. He is married to Marjorie Rendell and has one son.
