Early Life and Education

Born in Davenport, Iowa, John Goetz was one of four children. Growing up in the Mississippi River Valley, he initially aspired to become a teacher. However, his mother instilled in him a love for acting, which led him to enroll at the University of Iowa. There, he developed a passion for Shakespeare and pursued theater.

Professional Beginnings

In 1970-1971, Goetz worked at the prestigious American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. He subsequently toiled at a winery in Napa Valley and co-founded the Napa Valley Theatre Company. He made his television debut as a technician in the 1974 horror film "Killer Bees," which featured silent film legend Gloria Swanson.

New York and Television Breakthrough

Relocating to New York City, Goetz spent the next 14 years performing in local theaters. In 1974, he landed a contract role as Neil Johnson in the soap opera "Another World." He also appeared in the 1975 film "The Happy Hooker" and numerous other television roles.

Feature Film Recognition

Goetz's breakthrough film role came in 1984 with "Blood Simple," a thriller by the Coen Brothers. He portrayed a convicted murderer who is the illicit lover of Frances McDormand's character. The film garnered critical acclaim and raised Goetz's profile.

Notable Film Roles

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Goetz appeared in a string of notable films. He played the antagonistic editor in "The Fly" (1986) and its sequel "The Fly II" (1989). In "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989), he portrayed a Marine Corps major. He also played unpleasant boyfriends in "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" and "Curly Sue."

Recent Work

In 1998, Goetz had a leading role as Dr. Arthur Day in the television series "Maggie." He has since made numerous guest appearances in shows such as "Private Practice," "Prison Break," "How I Met Your Mother," and "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

In 2007, he had a starring role in David Fincher's "Zodiac." He reunited with Fincher in 2010 for "The Social Network," based on the 2009 book "The Accidental Billionaires" about the founding of Facebook.

Personal Life

Goetz married playwright Grace McKeaney in 1987. They have a daughter named Hannah.
