Michael Joseph Farrell was born on February 6, 1939 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He grew up in Hollywood, where his father worked as a carpenter in a local film studio. After graduating from school, he joined the United States Army and became a Marine Corps infantryman.

In 1968, he landed his first major role as Scott Banning in the NBC soap opera "Days of Our Lives."
