John Tanton: Life, Activism, and Influence

Early Life and Education

John Tanton was born in Detroit in 1934. In 1945, his family relocated to a farm northeast of Bay City, Michigan. Tanton earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Michigan State University in 1956, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1960, and a Master of Science in Ophthalmology from the University of Michigan in 1964.

Medical Practice and Environmental Activism

Tanton established an ophthalmology practice in Petoskey, Michigan. He was also involved in environmental activism, founding local chapters of the Sierra Club and Planned Parenthood. He briefly served as national president of Zero Population Growth.

Antimigration Advocacy

In 1979, Tanton founded the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) with support from Warren Buffett and Eugene McCarthy. He became a vocal proponent of reducing immigration to the United States. Tanton also co-founded or supported numerous other anti-immigration non-profit organizations, including U.S. English and the American Immigration Control Foundation.

Eugenics and Social Contract Press

In addition to his anti-immigration work, Tanton founded the Society for Genetic Education, a pro-eugenics organization. In 1990, he established Social Contract Press, a publisher of the quarterly journal The Social Contract. The journal promotes a white nationalist ideology and has been criticized for racist and xenophobic content.

Family and Support

Tanton is married to Mary Lou Tanton, who leads the U.S. Immigration Reform PAC. She is also the first vice president of Scenic Michigan. U.S. Inc., through which donations are funneled to Tanton's organizations, also supports environmental and cultural groups such as the International Dark-Sky Association and the North Country Trail Association.
