Early Life and CareerJohn Heitinga, a Dutch professional footballer, currently plays as a defender for AFC Ajax in the Eredivisie and the Netherlands national team. He began his career at the Ajax youth academy before making his first-team debut against Feyenoord on August 26, 2001.
Injury Struggles and Recovery
Under the guidance of Co Adriaanse and later Ronald Koeman, Heitinga quickly became a regular starter. However, his progress was halted by a serious injury that sidelined him for six months. After recovering, he played only one match before suffering another injury that required a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Heitinga's second recovery coincided with the start of the 2003-04 season. In his first game back against Volendam, he showcased impressive form and remained the club's primary center-back for the remainder of the season.
International Debut and Success
Heitinga's performances for Ajax caught the attention of Netherlands national team manager Dick Advocaat. He made his senior international debut in a friendly against the United States on February 18, 2004. That same year, he participated in the UEFA Euro 2004 in Portugal, playing in three of the five matches as the Netherlands reached the semi-finals.

In the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons, Heitinga experienced a decline in form, further compounded by Ajax's poor results and managerial changes. Despite these setbacks, he maintained his place in the national team under Marco van Basten. By late 2005, he had regained his leadership status at Ajax and went on to represent the Netherlands at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, playing in three of the four matches.
