Biography of John Horton Conway

English mathematician, specialist in the theory of finite groups, number theory, combinatorial game theory, and coding theory. He was also actively involved in recreational mathematics and is well known for developing the cellular automaton called the "Game of Life".

Early Life and Education

John Horton Conway was born in Liverpool, England to Agnes Boyce and Cyril Horton Conway. He developed an interest in mathematics at a young age, and his talent was recognized by his mother when he was able to easily enumerate powers of two at the age of two. At the age of 11, Conway decided to pursue a career in mathematics.

Conway went on to study at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In 1959, he received his bachelor's degree and began researching number theory under the guidance of Harold Davenport. During his research, Conway solved a problem previously posed by Davenport, which sparked his interest in working with transfinite ordinal numbers.

Career

After completing his doctorate in 1964, Conway became a lecturer and professor at the University of Cambridge. In 1986, he left Cambridge and joined Princeton University. He currently resides in Princeton, New Jersey. Conway has been married three times and has seven children from different marriages, as well as three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Contributions to Mathematics

Conway is best known for his contributions to combinatorial game theory. He collaborated with Elwyn Berlekamp and Richard Guy to write the book "Winning Ways for Your Mathematical Plays". He also invented games such as "Sprouts" and "Phutball" and conducted research on various other games and puzzles, including the Soma cube.

One of Conway's most popular creations is the "Game of Life", a unique model of a potentially self-replicating cellular automaton with simple rules. He initially experimented with this automaton on paper, but there are now numerous software implementations of the game.

In the mid-1960s, Conway worked with Michael Guy, the son of his colleague Richard Guy, on research related to complex aspects of spatial geometry. As a graduate student, Conway also made significant contributions to number theory, including a proof of Edward Waring's conjecture. However, before his proof could be published, Chen Jingrun independently developed a proof that was published first.

Conway also dedicated considerable effort to the development of algorithms. One of his most well-known creations is the "Doomsday Algorithm", a relatively simple method for mentally calculating the day of the week for any given date. Conway was able to calculate the day of the week in just two seconds, and he trained himself using a specially designed program that presented him with daily challenges every time he turned on his computer.
