John I Axouchos, Emperor of Trebizond
John I Axouchos was the third emperor of the Empire of Trebizond, ruling from 1235 to 1238. He belonged to the Great Komnenos dynasty, being the son of Alexios I of Trebizond, the founder of the dynasty, and Theodora Axouchina, the daughter of John Komnenos Axouchos.
Accession and Reign
John ascended to the throne in 1235 following the death of his brother-in-law, Andronikos I Gidos. His reign was short-lived. Three years after becoming emperor, he met an untimely end in a tragic polo accident, where he fell from his horse and was trampled to death.
Family
The name of John's wife is not known. He had one son:- Johnnikos Great Komnenos, who was sent to a monastery after his father's death.
Successor
Upon John's death, his younger brother, Manuel I Great Komnenos, became the next emperor of Trebizond.
