John J. Clune: A Legacy in Athletics and Leadership
Early Life and EducationJohn J. Clune was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and attended St. Peter's High School, where he excelled in basketball. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1954, where he set numerous basketball records that remained unbroken for over three decades. Clune earned a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and completed the Armed Forces Staff College in 1959 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1972.
Military Career
Clune's initial assignment was in missile operations, maintenance, and administration. He served as an Air Force OIC from 1965 to 1968. Prior to returning to the Academy, he was Chief of the Electronics and Equipment Division, Air Force Logistics Command, and Chief of the Logistics Engineering Branch.
Athletic Director at the USAF Academy
Upon assuming the role of Athletic Director at the United States Air Force Academy, Clune orchestrated the Academy's addition to the Western Athletic Conference. He established the tenth varsity intercollegiate program for women, with the first class enrolled in 1976. Having experience working with the Women's Air Corps (WAC), Clune served on the Compliance, Finance, and Extra Events Committees.
Leadership in Collegiate Athletics
Clune became President of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and served on the NCAA's Postseason Football Committee. He was also Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the College Football Association and Past Chairman of the NCAA's Voting Committee. Clune played a pivotal role in working with civic leaders in Colorado Springs to establish the United States Olympic Training Center and host two Olympic Sports Festivals.
Legacy and Recognition
Clune retired from his position as Athletic Director at the USAF Academy in 1996 after 16 years of service. He attained the rank of Colonel in the United States Air Force. His awards include the Legion of Merit, two Meritorious Service Medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal. Clune passed away from cancer in 1996. Clune Arena, part of the Cadet Fieldhouse multipurpose sports complex at the United States Air Force Academy, is named in his honor.
