John Mulaney: A Multifaceted American Comedian
Early Life and EducationJohn Edmund Mulaney was born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois, to Irish-Catholic parents, Charles and Ellen Mulaney. His grandfather and great-grandfather served in the U.S. House of Representatives. From a young age, Mulaney exhibited a playful and imaginative nature. Despite claiming to be an underachiever, he found creative ways to express himself, such as performing skits in school.
Stand-up Comedy and Writing
After graduating from Georgetown University with degrees in English and theology, Mulaney moved to New York City in 2004. He got his start as a writer for the sketch comedy show "Saturday Night Live" from 2008 to 2018, where he also appeared in five episodes. Mulaney went on to develop his own stand-up comedy style, known for its self-deprecating humor and observational wit. In 2012, he released his first comedy special, "John Mulaney: New in Town."
Film and Television
In addition to stand-up, Mulaney has made a name for himself in film and television. He starred in the short-lived sitcom "Mulaney" in 2014. He also created and starred in the Broadway show "Oh, Hello Show" with Nick Kroll, which parodied two fictional elderly men with mispronounced words and bizarre opinions. Mulaney has also appeared in films such as "Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers" and "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."
Personal Life
Mulaney was married to makeup artist Annamarie Tendler from 2014 to 2021. In November 2021, he welcomed a son, Malcolm, with actress Olivia Munn. The couple married in July 2024. Mulaney has been open about his struggles with substance abuse and his subsequent recovery.
Current Projects
Mulaney continues to tour as a stand-up comedian and work on various projects. He hosted and executive produced the Netflix talk show "John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA" in May 2024. He is also involved in the animated series "Big Mouth" and the upcoming film "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse."
