Nathan Deal: A Political Journey from Democrat to Republican
Early Life and EducationNathan Deal was born in Milledgeville, Georgia in 1942 and raised in Sandersville. His parents were teachers, instilling in him a strong work ethic and public service values. Deal attended Mercer University in Macon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated with honors. In 1966, he received his Juris Doctor and subsequently served in the U.S. Army, rising to the rank of captain.
Legal and Judicial Career
After his military service, Deal embarked on a 23-year private law practice. He also served as a prosecutor, Superior Court judge for the Northeastern Judicial Circuit, and Juvenile Court judge for Hall County.
Political Career
State Senator and U.S. Representative (1980-1995)Deal's political career began in 1980 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate as a Democrat. In 1990, he became President Pro Tempore of the Senate. In 1992, Deal was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia's 9th Congressional District and succeeding eight-term incumbent Ed Jenkins. He was reelected in 1994.
Partisan Switch to Republican Party (1995)
In a significant political move, Deal switched parties from Democrat to Republican in 1995. His decision came shortly after Republicans gained control of the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years. Deal later credited then-Speaker Newt Gingrich's "Contract with America" with influencing his decision.
U.S. Congressional Tenure (1995-2010)
Deal was reelected to Congress seven more times as a Republican. He served on several key committees, including the House Judiciary Committee and the House Rules Committee.
Gubernatorial Race and Election (2010)
On March 1, 2010, Deal announced his resignation from Congress to focus on his gubernatorial campaign. On November 3, 2010, he was elected Governor of Georgia, defeating Democratic candidate Roy Barnes with 53% of the vote.

Deal took office as Georgia's 82nd governor on January 10, 2011. He has overseen significant economic growth and job creation in the state.
