Doug Burgum: From Tech Entrepreneur to North Dakota Governor
Doug Burgum is an American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and politician who currently serves as the 33rd governor of North Dakota. Born into a farming family, Burgum pursued higher education at the University of North Dakota and Stanford University's business school.
Entrepreneurial Success
In 1981, Burgum founded Great Plains Software, a company specializing in accounting software. In 1997, the company went public, and was later acquired by Microsoft for $1.1 billion. Burgum worked at Microsoft, developing business software, until he left in 2007.
Philanthropy and Civic Involvement
Burgum is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the city of Fargo, North Dakota. He founded The Kilbourne Group to support community development projects. Additionally, Burgum served as chairman of the board of SuccessFactors, which was sold for $3.4 billion in 2011, and held a similar role at Atlassian until 2016.
Political Career
In 2016, incumbent North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple decided not to seek re-election. Burgum emerged victorious in the Republican primary against Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem. He faced unopposed Democratic candidate Marvin Nelson in a state that had not elected a Democratic governor since 1992. On November 8, 2016, Burgum won the gubernatorial election with 76.7% of the vote, while Nelson received 19.4%.
North Dakota's 33rd Governor
As governor, Burgum has focused on economic development, education, and government efficiency. He has also prioritized energy development and infrastructure improvements. Burgum's tenure has been marked by a bipartisan approach to governance, working with both Republicans and Democrats to advance the state's interests.
