John Obi Mikel is a Nigerian footballer and midfielder for the English club, Chelsea. He showed great talent in football from a young age and by the age of fifteen, he was already playing at a high level. In 2003, he was selected to play in the main matches of the country and even participated in the FIFA World Championship for players under seventeen, held in Finland.

Mikel spent some time playing for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa, where he caught the attention of the international stage. He performed brilliantly in the FIFA U-20 World Championship, leading the Nigerian team to the final, where they were defeated by Argentina with a score of 2-1.

Born in Jos, Nigeria, Mikel comes from a family of a former civil servant. His father belonged to the Igbo ethnic group, and his name, 'Nchekwube,' means 'hope' in the Igbo dialect, while 'Obinna' means 'father's heart.'
