Early Career and NicknameMathieu Valbuena, a French footballer renowned for his attacking midfield prowess, began his professional career with Girondins de Bordeaux. However, due to his diminutive stature, he was released by the club, a decision that echoed the case of Sean Wright-Phillips with Nottingham Forest.
Undeterred, Valbuena joined Langon-Castets, where his exceptional skills caught the attention of talent scouts. This led to his swift return to the higher-level Libourne Saint-Seurin, coinciding with their promotion to Ligue 2. In two seasons at Libourne, Valbuena honed his abilities, scoring 10 goals in 53 appearances. His impressive 2005-06 campaign, which included 9 goals in 29 matches, played a pivotal role in the team's promotion to Ligue 2, although they were relegated the following season. Nonetheless, Valbuena's individual performances were recognized with the club's Player of the Year award.
Olympique de Marseille and National Team Debut
Valbuena's success at Libourne made him a sought-after player, and on June 9, 2006, his dream of playing in Ligue 1 was realized when he signed a three-year contract with Olympique de Marseille. However, his debut was delayed due to an injury sustained during summer training. Nevertheless, he made 14 appearances in his first season, primarily as a substitute, scoring his first goal for the club in the 86th minute against Saint Etienne.
In subsequent seasons, Valbuena's playing time increased significantly, and he played a pivotal role in Marseille's success. His performances earned him a contract extension until 2010, and in April 2008, he signed a further extension until 2013. Despite his impressive form, Valbuena was initially overlooked by the French youth teams. However, his performances for Marseille caught the attention of manager Raymond Domenech, who called him up for matches against England and Mali. Unfortunately, Valbuena sustained another injury in training, forcing him to miss both games.
World Cup and Current Career
Despite his injury setbacks, Valbuena continued to excel for Marseille, leading the club to Ligue 1 and Coupe de la Ligue titles. His performances also earned him a spot in the provisional 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup and subsequently in the final 23-man squad. He made his international debut against Costa Rica, scoring the only goal of the match.
