Early Life and Education

John Thomas Sayles is an American film director and screenwriter, occasionally taking on acting roles in his own productions. Born into a family of an Irish-American teacher and a school administrator, Sayles was raised Catholic and now identifies as a "Catholic atheist." He attended Williams College, where he discovered his passion for filmmaking.

Collaboration with Roger Corman and Early Success

Like Martin Scorsese and James Cameron, Sayles began his career in the film industry through a collaboration with Roger Corman. With a $30,000 payment from Corman for screenwriting services, Sayles independently produced his debut film, "Return of the Secaucus 7" (1980). The film featured his friends as actors, was shot in one house, and was completed over a three-day weekend.

In 1983, after the release of "Baby It's You" and "Lianna" (a lyrical exploration of a married woman's disillusionment and subsequent love for another woman), Sayles received a five-year MacArthur Fellowship grant of $40,000 annually. He used these funds to create "The Brother from Another Planet" (1984), a film about a three-fingered black slave from another planet who finds solace in Harlem.

Television and Screenwriting

In 1989, Sayles wrote and directed the pilot for the television series "Shannon's Deal," starring Jamey Sheridan. He received an Edgar Award for his work in 1990, but the series was canceled in 1991 after airing only 16 episodes.

Sayles primarily funded his independent films by screenwriting for others, including "Piranha," "Alligator," "The Howling," and "The Challenge." He also worked as a script doctor, contributing to films such as "Apollo 13" and "The Fugitive." Sayles only accepts screenplay writing assignments that interest him as potential directorial projects, while script doctoring allows him to observe other filmmakers and support fellow writers.

Unscripted Success

One of Sayles' unproduced screenplays, "Night Skies," laid the groundwork for Steven Spielberg's blockbuster hit "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Spielberg later asked Sayles to write the screenplay for the fourth installment of the "Jurassic Park" franchise.

Filmmaking Career and Recognition

In 1997, "Return of the Secaucus 7" was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress National Film Registry among 25 other films of 1980. Sayles' recent directorial and screenwriting projects include "A Cold Case" (2011), "The Spiderwick Chronicles" (2008), "Honeydripper" (2007), and "Silver City" (2004).
