Early Life and Education

John Gerard Stumpf, an American financier, was born in Pierz, Minnesota. He was one of 11 children in a family that owned a local dairy farm. Stumpf's heritage is German, and he was raised Catholic. He didn't excel academically in school and had limited family finances, which led him to start working after high school. He eventually attended St. Cloud State University on a temporary basis and earned a bachelor's degree in finance. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he received a Master of Business Administration degree. During his studies, Stumpf gained practical experience by working as a collection agent at a local bank.

In 1982, Stumpf joined Northwest National Bank, a precursor to Wells Fargo, where he worked in the credit department. Over time, he held various leadership positions and in 1989, he became the head of Norwest Bank in Arizona. Two years later, he took charge of a whole region and managed the Texas banks of Norwest from 1994 to 1998. During his tenure, Stumpf successfully integrated 30 Texas banks into the company, which amounted to over 13 billion dollars in assets.

In 1998, after the merger of Norwest Corporation and Wells Fargo & Company, Stumpf became the head of the Southwest Banking Group, overseeing the operations in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Under his leadership, Wells Fargo acquired First Security Corporation in Salt Lake City for 23 billion dollars in 2000. Stumpf was appointed as the Executive Vice President of Community Banking Group in May 2002, and in August 2005, he became the President of Wells Fargo. In June 2006, he was elected as the CEO and assumed the position a year later in June 2007. In December 2008, Stumpf orchestrated another significant acquisition, merging Wachovia into Wells Fargo. In January 2010, he became the Chairman of the company.
