Biography of John Tenta

John Tenta, a Canadian professional wrestler, was born in Surrey, British Columbia. He was named after his father and was a large baby, weighing around five kilograms at birth. From a young age, Tenta was drawn to wrestling, particularly professional wrestlers Gene Kiniski and Don Leo Jonathan. At the age of six, he decided to pursue his favorite sport and started with freestyle wrestling. By 1981, he became the junior champion of Canada.

After turning eighteen, Tenta finished sixth in the World Junior Wrestling Championship in the heavyweight category. He then earned a sports scholarship to attend Louisiana State University, where he continued to compete at the collegiate level. After university, Tenta went to Japan to study sumo wrestling. He became interested in this sport after meeting a former yokozuna in Vancouver. In October 1985, Tenta joined a sumo wrestling stable.

Compared to his fellow sumo wrestlers, Tenta started his sumo career relatively late, as most wrestlers join around the age of fifteen or sixteen. However, his considerable weight and previous wrestling training allowed him to progress quickly in this new field. Despite his success, Tenta eventually left sumo due to the demanding lifestyle and strict requirements. Additionally, his tattoo on his left bicep posed a problem, as tattoos in Japan are associated with gangsters and would have needed to be removed for him to reach a high rank.

After working in the Japanese wrestling federation for a while, Tenta decided to return to America. Back in the States, John continued his wrestling career. He participated in matches for the WWF and later moved to WCW before returning to WWF. In 2004, Tenta retired from the ring after being diagnosed with bladder cancer. The doctors gave him a grim prognosis, with only a one in five chance of survival. Chemotherapy failed to have the desired effect due to a miscalculation, and the tumor spread to his lungs. On June 7, 2006, Tenta passed away.
