Johnny Bobbitt, the Homeless Marine Who Scammed Thousands
Johnny Bobbitt, a homeless Marine veteran, was arrested after scamming thousands of dollars on the GoFundMe platform. Bobbitt is accused of conspiracy to commit fraud. His elaborate scheme, hatched with a New Jersey couple, raised a staggering amount on the crowdfunding site.
The Elaborate GoFundMe Scam
Mark D'Amico and Kate McClure launched an online fundraiser to 'reward' Bobbitt, a homeless ex-Marine, who allegedly gave McClure his last $20 when her car ran out of gas. Prosecutors allege that the trio concocted the story to "defraud unsuspecting donors." The fabrication reportedly lured over 14,000 people and yielded a total of $402,000.
Bobbitt's Arrest and Allegations
After failing to appear for a court hearing, a warrant was issued for Bobbitt's arrest. GoFundMe announced last month that it had refunded over $100,000 to defrauded donors. In August 2018, Bobbitt accused Mark and Kate of cheating him out of the money raised to buy him a home. They allegedly gave him $75,000, a used camper van, and a pickup truck that soon broke down. The couple claimed they took these actions to prevent Bobbitt from spending the money on drugs.
D'Amico and McClure Released, Bobbitt Violates Probation
D'Amico and McClure were released from custody, while Bobbitt was held until December 14, 2018, and released on the condition that he attend Narcotics Anonymous meetings and seek employment. Bobbitt violated the terms of his probation and was arrested again in Philadelphia on January 9, 2018. Mark and Kate are once again under investigation.
The Scheme Unraveled
The alleged conspiracy was reportedly uncovered through McClure's conversations with a friend, in which she bragged about devising a lucrative scheme.
