Frederick Alfred Heath, better known as Johnny Kidd, was born on October 7, 1966, in Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom. Although the exact year of his birth remains uncertain, with various sources stating different years from 1935 to 1941, the number 1935 is engraved on his tombstone. Tragically, Johnny Kidd passed away at the age of 31 in an automobile accident in Bolton on October 7, 1966.
The Formation of "Fred Heath & Nutters"
In the late 1950s, five English boys with a passion for the new musical movement called "rock 'n' roll" formed a group and began making their own music. Their leader, Fred Heath, named their collective "Fred Heath & Nutters." Despite their talent and fresh approach to rock 'n' roll, they struggled to achieve success. Recognizing the fierce competition among young bands and musical collectives in London during that era, Fred Heath concluded that their image was holding them back.

In 1959, the unknown rock group transformed themselves into a daring pirate gang. Fred Heath became Johnny Kidd, wielding a machete dangerously on stage with an eye patch, while the rest of the band dressed as pirates. The newly named "Johnny Kidd & The Pirates" quickly garnered attention from audiences and the press. Despite critics considering their music ordinary, the group's theatrical performances made them impossible to ignore. In later years, "Johnny Kidd & The Pirates" would be recognized as one of the most underrated bands of British rock 'n' roll.
Rise to Success
In 1960, their singles "Please Don't Touch" and "Shakin' All Over" climbed high on the charts. Their next single, "I'll Never Get Over You," reached fourth place in the UK. With their growing success, it remains unknown what heights "Johnny Kidd & The Pirates" could have reached or if they would have competed with the emerging "Beatles." Unfortunately, the talented Johnny Kidd's life was cut short on October 7, 1966, in Bolton, leaving behind memories of his iconic eye patch, tall pirate boots, and his somewhat clumsy wielding of pirate weaponry.
