Early Life and InfluencesJoko Anwar, born on January 3, 1976, in Medan, Indonesia, has become the most influential director in Indonesian cinema, known for his mastery of horror films. His passion for filmmaking emerged at an early age when he would visit a movie theater an hour away from his home, escaping into the world of cinema. "I didn't like the family I was born into. I didn't like the environment I grew up in," Anwar recalled. "It was not a friendly place for a child. So, I found an escape in watching movies. To see places that I wanted to go. To see families that were better than mine."
Education and Career Path
Despite his family's insistence, Anwar pursued a degree in aeronautical engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology. However, his creative spirit drew him to writing and directing plays during his college years.
After graduating, Anwar worked as a journalist for The Jakarta Post. A chance encounter with director Nia Dinata led to his debut as a screenwriter and actor in the 2003 film "Arisan!"
Filmmaking Debut and Recognition
Anwar's directorial debut came with the 2005 romantic comedy "Janji Joni," which garnered nine nominations at the Indonesian Film Festival. However, it was his love of horror that truly propelled his career.
Horror Masterpieces
In 2007, Anwar released "Kala," a horror film rooted in Indonesian mythology. His 2017 film, "Satan's Slaves," paid homage to the horror classic that inspired him as a child. The film became a massive hit, grossing over $16 million on a budget of only $150,000. Its sequel, "Satan's Slaves 2: Communion," was released in 2022.
Personal Life
Anwar's personal life remains private. The 181 cm tall director primarily uses his Instagram account to promote his work and share occasional glimpses of his daily life.
International Recognition
Anwar's growing popularity has extended beyond Indonesia, with his films being distributed internationally. In April 2024, his latest film, "The Witch: Part 2. The Other One," will be released in Russian theaters.
