Hindreku Maasik: Estonian Director, Photographer, and Musician

Hindreku Maasik is a well-known figure in the entertainment industry, with a diverse portfolio that includes directing, photography, and music. Having worked with numerous artists and bands, Maasik shared his insights on the current trends in music videos and revealed some interesting anecdotes from his career.

The Early Years

When asked about his first music video, Maasik reminisces about a time nearly twenty years ago. Since then, he has directed around two hundred videos, with one of his personal favorites being Kazaky's "Crazy Law," which was shot in an abandoned prison near Tallinn. Despite the lack of basic amenities such as electricity and heating, Maasik's passion for the project prevailed.

The Cost of Art

Maasik emphasizes that the budget is not the determining factor for him when choosing projects. Instead, he prioritizes the quality of the music. If he resonates with a song, he is willing to work for free or even cover certain expenses. The cost of a music video can range from as low as $100 to as high as $10,000, depending on the concept and resources required.

Challenges and Adventures

Having directed several music videos for the popular group "Diskoteka Avaria," Maasik recalls the most challenging one being a recent shoot in the United States. The team faced uncertainty until the last moment, not knowing where they would film. Maasik is no stranger to international projects, having worked in Cuba multiple times. Despite the technical difficulties, he appreciates the natural beauty and the enthusiasm of the local participants.

Working with Artists

When asked about artists who began their careers through his music videos, Maasik mentions his early collaboration with "Diskoteka Avaria," having produced twenty videos for the group. He has also worked with Valeriya, creating seven videos for her. Other notable collaborations include bands like "Band'Eros," Tina Karol, and Vlad Darwin.

Trends in Music Videos

Reflecting on the evolution of music videos, Maasik acknowledges the constant emergence of new trends and gimmicks. However, he notes that the current music industry doesn't allow for many visually powerful videos due to limited budgets. Many opt for green screen or studio setups, relying on graphics and 3D effects. Maasik, however, prefers the authenticity of natural settings.

With his extensive experience and artistic vision, Hindreku Maasik continues to make a significant impact on the world of music videos. Through his unique approach to storytelling and visual aesthetics, he captures the essence of each song and brings it to life on screen.
