Early Life and Education
Jon Lansman was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Southgate, North London. His father, Bernard, was a Conservative Councillor in Hackney.
Lansman attended a private grammar school from 1970 to 1975. He first visited Israel at the age of 16, volunteering on a kibbutz in the Negev.
He earned an economics degree from Clare College, Cambridge, graduating in 1979. He later pursued an MA in History and Politics at Birkbeck, University of London, graduating in 2007.
Political Career
Tony Benn's Leadership CampaignsDuring the early years of the Labour Party's opposition after the defeat of the Labour government in 1979, Lansman served as Tony Benn's "principal assistant." He was prominent in the Campaign for Labour Party Democracy and worked with Benn in his campaign for the 1981 Labour Party Deputy Leadership election.
Lansman helped organize Benn's unsuccessful campaign for the 1988 Labour Party leadership election.
Post-Corbyn
In 2010, Lansman worked as a researcher for Michael Meacher. He also became editor of the left-wing website Left Futures that year.
In 2023, Lansman rejoined the Jewish Labour Movement and criticized the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign (PSC) for using the chant "from the river to the sea" at pro-Palestinian protests.
Personal Life
Lansman married Bethany Wagstaff in 1985 in Lewisham. She died of breast cancer in 1999 at the age of 39; the couple had three children.
Lansman is an atheist, although he still observes some Jewish holidays.
