Early Life and Education
Belarusian scientist and statesman Dmitry Bobrovnitsky was born in 1905 into a peasant family in Koydanovo, now Dzerzhinsk. After completing seven years of schooling in 1923, he graduated from the Agricultural Academy in Gorki with a degree in logging engineering in 1929.
Academic Career
Bobrovnitsky continued his studies in the graduate program of the Golem Forestry Institute until 1932, when he became an associate professor. In 1934, he moved to Minsk and enrolled in the graduate program of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. He earned his Candidate of Sciences degree in 1936.
Rector of Belarusian State University
In January 1938, Bobrovnitsky was appointed rector of Belarusian State University (BSU). However, his tenure was cut short when he was arrested on July 12, 1938, and charged with espionage and sabotage.
Release and Return to BSU
During interrogation, Bobrovnitsky initially confessed to the charges but later recanted. On March 10, 1940, his case was dismissed, and he was released. Bobrovnitsky resumed his position as an associate professor at BSU's Department of Organic Chemistry.
Post-War Career
During the evacuation, Bobrovnitsky worked in the Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and Moscow. He returned to BSU in 1947. Despite attempting to defend his doctoral dissertation, he did not receive sufficient support. In 1955, he was dismissed from the university due to staff reductions.
