Jón Magnússon
Early Life and CareerJón Magnússon was born on October 23, 1859, in Bjarnarflag, West Iceland. He pursued a career in law, graduating from the University of Copenhagen in 1885. Upon his return to Iceland, Magnússon established a successful legal practice in Reykjavik.
Political Involvement
Magnússon entered politics as a member of the Home Rule Party. He was elected to the Icelandic parliament, the Althing, in 1898. During his time in parliament, Magnússon advocated for Icelandic independence from Denmark.
First Term as Prime Minister (1917-1922)
On January 4, 1917, Magnússon became Prime Minister of Iceland. During his first term, Iceland declared independence from Denmark on December 1, 1918, while maintaining a personal union with the Danish King Christian X.
Interregnum and Second Term as Prime Minister (1922-1926)
Magnússon's first term as Prime Minister ended on March 17, 1922. He subsequently joined the Conservative Party and served as its chairman from 1923 to 1926. On March 22, 1924, Magnússon was elected Prime Minister for a second term.
