Early Life and Education
Steponas Jukna was born in Linuva, Lithuania. He graduated from a gymnasium in Linkuva and later volunteered for the Lithuanian Army during the Lithuanian Wars of Independence (1919-1921). After the war, Jukna studied economics at the Lithuanian University in Kaunas, graduating in 1929. He continued his studies in economics at Frankfurt University (1929-1931) and London University.
Academic Career
In 1931, Jukna began teaching at Vytautas Magnus University. After the Soviet annexation of Lithuania in 1940, he continued teaching at Vilnius University, where he became a professor in 1941. From 1944 onwards, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at Vilnius State University.
Membership and Honours
In 1946, Jukna was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. He was also a member of the Lithuanian National Academy of Sciences.
Rectorship and Academic Contributions
Jukna served as Pro-Rector of Vilnius State University from 1945 to 1947. In 1948, he was appointed Rector, a position he held until 1956.
During his tenure as Rector, Jukna focused on planning the university's finances and curriculum. He also established new departments and research centers.
Economic Research
Jukna's research primarily focused on economic planning, taxation, and pension funds. His most significant work, titled "The Principle of Economic Efficiency in the Theory of Tax Distribution" (1935), explored the relationship between taxation and economic growth.
