Early Life and Education

Jonas Kubiliuswas born in the village of Fermos in Lithuania. From 1928-1932, he attended elementary school in Rutkiškes, continuing his education at a progymnasium in Eržvilkas (1932-1935) and a gymnasium in Raseiniai (1935-1940).

Academic Career

In 1940, Kubilius began his studies at Vilnius University, interrupted only by a brief period as a teacher in Eržvilkas (1944-1945). After graduating in 1946, he served as an assistant at the Vilnius State University's laboratory until 1948, when he became the director of preparatory courses.

In 1948, Kubilius commenced his postgraduate work at Leningrad State University under the supervision of Yu. V. Linnik, completing his studies in 1951. He returned to Vilnius State University as a senior lecturer, later becoming an associate professor.

Academic Leadership

In 1956, Kubilius's research sector at the Institute of Physics and Technology was transformed into the Institute of Physics and Mathematics. He became the head of its sector and deputy director.

In 1958, Kubilius was appointed rector of Vilnius State University, a position he held until 1991. Concurrently, he chaired the university's Department of Probability Theory and Number Theory (1958-1992).

Kubilius also served as the president of the Society of Mathematicians of Lithuania, a member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR (1962-1992), and a member of the Lithuanian Parliament (1992-1996).

Research and Publications

Kubilius's primary research interests were in number theory. He published over 1,000 articles and authored several books, including "Probabilistic Methods in Number Theory" (1959) and "History of Vilnius University" (1976-1979).

He also contributed to the development of the dictionary of mathematical terms in Lithuanian ("Matematikos terminų žodynas", 1994).

Legacy

Kubilius was a respected mathematician who made significant contributions to his field. His research and leadership helped establish Lithuania as a center of mathematical excellence. He is remembered as the father of mathematician Kęstutis Kubilius.
