Biography of Matvey Tikhomandrisky

Matvey Tikhomandrisky, a Russian mathematician, doctor of pure mathematics, and professor of mathematics at Kharkov University, was born in 1844 in Kiev. He was the son of Alexander Nikitich Tikhomandrisky. Tikhomandrisky received his primary and secondary education at home and in St. Petersburg. In 1861, he entered St. Petersburg University's Faculty of Physics and Mathematics and completed his studies in 1865, earning a gold medal for his essay on parabolic interpolation.

Early Career and Academic Achievements

After completing his studies, Tikhomandrisky worked as a mathematics teacher in a gymnasium. In 1876, he defended his dissertation on "Hypergeometric Series" at the same university and obtained his master's degree. From 1879, he served as an associate professor, teaching the theory of elliptic functions and descriptive geometry. Tikhomandrisky also taught mathematics at higher courses in 1880-1881. In 1883, he was appointed as an associate professor at Kharkov University and defended his dissertation on "Inverse Hyperelliptic Integrals" in 1885, earning his doctorate in pure mathematics. In 1888, he became a full professor.

Contributions to Mathematics

Throughout his professorial career, Tikhomandrisky covered almost all areas of pure mathematics in his lectures at the university. In addition to his dissertations, he published numerous articles and books, including "On the Inverse Problem of Elliptic Integrals" (two articles in "Mathem. Ann."), "Sketch of a Method for Determining the Genus and Adjacent Curves of an Algebraic Curve" ("Ann. de l'ecole norm. sup."), and various papers in the "Reports of the Kharkov Mathematical Society". He also authored books on the foundations of Abelian integrals, the theory of elliptic integrals and functions, and courses on higher algebra, finite differences, differential, and integral calculus.

Professional Affiliations and Inventions

Tikhomandrisky collaborated with the "Jahrbuch uber die Fortschritte der Mathematik" in 1882-1883 and later contributed to the "Revue Semestrielle des publications mathematiques" edited by P.H. Schoute, providing abstracts of articles published in the "Reports of the Kharkov Mathematical Society". In 1895, he invented an automatic device for stopping trains, which was successfully tested but not yet implemented. In 1889, Tikhomandrisky developed a project for a monument to V.N. Karazin, which was submitted to the relevant commission.
