Ján Záborský

Ján Záborský (1812-1876) was a renowned Slovak playwright and poet.
Literary Beginnings

In the early 1840s, Záborský published collections of poetry that garnered significant attention. However, his 1851 collection was met with harsh criticism, leading him to withdraw from writing for many years.

Dramatic Rebirth

In 1864, Záborský emerged with a series of Slovak-language plays. His "Básne dramatické" (1864) was published under the pseudonym Vojan Josifovič. This was followed by "Lžedimitrijady" (1864), a collection of nine dramas set during the Time of Troubles in Russia. Over the next few years, he wrote 17 additional plays depicting events from Slovak history.

Satirical Prose

In the 1870s, Záborský adopted the pseudonym Feador and penned satirical short stories. These writings exposed the social and political ills of his time.

Legacy

Ján Záborský's works played a significant role in shaping Slovak literature. His dramatic and satirical writings continue to be celebrated for their vivid characters, incisive social commentary, and enduring relevance.
