Biography of Jonathan Adler
Jonathan Adler, an American designer, was born in 1966 in New Jersey, United States, into a Jewish family. He developed a passion for pottery from a young age, which eventually became his profession. While studying history at Brown University, Adler continued to pursue his love for ceramics. In 1990, he moved to New York and by 1993, he had sold his first works to the 'Barneys New York' chain of stores. In 1998, he opened his own retail store in Manhattan, which quickly gained recognition and established Adler as an incredibly talented and original interior designer.
Expansion and Partnerships
Adler's company continued to expand, with his stores popping up all over the country. In 2001, he opened a store in Los Angeles, followed by the launch of a glamorous furniture collection for bedrooms and bathrooms in 2002. In 2005, Adler's stores opened in Miami, Chicago, and San Francisco. Today, Jonathan Adler has partnerships with various fashion industry companies, including 'Lacoste', '7 For All Mankind', 'Lifeguard Stationery', 'Steuben', 'Larson Juhl', 'Robert Abbey Lighting', and 'HSN'. His company offers a wide range of products to create an original interior, including decor items, bedding, bathroom and bedroom accessories, furniture, rugs, pillows, lighting fixtures, and even candles.
Design Philosophy and Barbie Dream House
Adler firmly believes that a good interior is the most powerful antidepressant in the world. He has worked on numerous projects, including designing the interior for Barbie's Malibu Dream House in celebration of her 50th anniversary. The Barbie Dream House was adorned with Adler's nightstand, lamp, mirror, tray, books, and several other decorative elements. Adler's design philosophy emphasizes that a home doesn't necessarily have to be filled with luxurious furniture or masterpieces of world art. Instead, he advises people to decorate their living spaces in a way that brings them joy and reflects their essence. He encourages unconventional approaches to interior design, such as playing with scale, mixing "unmixable" colors and paints, experimenting with symmetry and composition, and creating "artistic chaos" by combining unexpected elements.
Expressive Design and Personal Life
Jonathan Adler can be described as an expressive designer. He openly embraces his homosexuality and, in 2008, officially married his partner, writer Simon Doonan. Adler has actively advocated for same-sex marriage and the rights of sexual minorities. He admires the works of David Hicks and is a fan of his friend Doonan's book, 'Beautiful People'.
