Jonathan Demme, an American director, producer, and screenwriter, was born in 1944 in New York, USA. He graduated from the University of Florida and began working in the film industry in the early 1970s as a companion to Roger Corman at his studio, New World. During this time, Demme wrote screenplays and produced films based on them.

Early Career

In 1974, Demme directed his first film, "Caged Heat," a prison drama, followed by "Fighting Mad," an action-drama, in 1976. After his film "Melvin and Howard" received critical acclaim in 1980, Demme signed a contract with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell for the upcoming project "Swing Shift." Despite constant disagreements between Hawn and Demme during the shooting, the film, which focused on World War II, was emotionally powerful and successful.

Success with "The Silence of the Lambs"

In 1991, Demme released his most renowned film, "The Silence of the Lambs." Initially, screenwriter Ted Tally envisioned Jodie Foster as the lead character, Agent Starling. However, when Demme took on the directorial role, he decided to cast Michelle Pfeiffer instead. Pfeiffer declined due to the film's violent and gruesome nature, leading Demme to ultimately cast Foster, a decision that proved successful. "The Silence of the Lambs" won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, and Best Actress.

Later Career

Following "The Silence of the Lambs," Demme directed and produced numerous films, including "Philadelphia" in 1993, which starred Tom Hanks and also received an Oscar. The film tackled the issue of homosexuality and its connection to AIDS, generating mixed reviews but significant attention worldwide. In 2004, Demme directed the political thriller "The Manchurian Candidate," starring Denzel Washington and Meryl Streep.

His recent project includes directing and producing the drama "Rachel Getting Married" in 2008.
