Early Life and Involvement in Irish Politics

Terry George, an Irish screenwriter and director, was born on December 20, 1952, in Belfast, Ireland. As a teenager, George was arrested in 1971 on suspicion of involvement with the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA), a terrorist organization. He was a member of the Irish Republican Socialist Party and was sentenced to six years in prison. However, in 1978, George was released early for good behavior.

Moving to the United States and Early Career

In 1981, George relocated to New York. Four years later, he made his debut on the American stage as a playwright with "The Tunnel," a drama based on his experiences in a Belfast prison. It was during this time that George first collaborated with Jim Sheridan, a prominent Irish director.

Expanding into Writing and Filmmaking

In 1993, George made his breakthrough as a screenwriter and assistant director for the biographical drama "In the Name of the Father," starring Daniel Day-Lewis and directed by Jim Sheridan. This marked the beginning of his successful career in both writing and filmmaking.

In 1996, George directed and wrote the film "Some Mother's Son," featuring Helen Mirren and Fionnula Flanagan. He continued to work on various film projects, including serving as an executive producer and co-creator of the television drama series "The District" from 2000 to 2004, starring Craig Nelson, David O'Hara, and Lynn Tigpen.

Award-Winning Films

In 2004, George directed, produced, and co-wrote the critically acclaimed film "Hotel Rwanda," based on the true story of a hotel manager who saved the lives of over a thousand people during the Hutu-Tutsi conflict. The film starred Don Cheadle and Sophie Okonedo and won the top prize at the 29th Toronto International Film Festival.
