Biography of Joni Ernst
Early Life and EducationJoni Ernst was born and raised in Red Oak, Iowa. In 1992, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University. She later pursued a Master of Public Administration from Columbus College (now Columbus State University) in Columbus, Georgia, which she obtained in 1995.
Military Service
From 1993 to 2001, Ernst served in the United States Army Reserve. In 2001, she joined the Iowa National Guard, where she rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She served 14 months in Kuwait as a company commander during the Iraq War in 2003-04.
Political Career
Ernst entered politics as the Montgomery County, Iowa, Auditor from 2005 to 2011. She then served as a state Senator in the Iowa Senate from 2011 to 2014. In 2014, she ran for the United States Senate as a Republican and was elected as the first female senator from Iowa and the first female veteran in the Senate.
Senate Tenure
As a senator, Ernst has focused on issues such as national security, agriculture, and economic development. In November 2018, she was elected the Vice Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference.
Personal Life
Ernst is married to Gaylen, a retired officer. They have one daughter, Libby. Gaylen also has two daughters from a previous marriage.
