Early Life and Education
Priti Patel was born in Islington, London, on March 29, 1972, to Ugandan-Indian parents who had emigrated from the Indian state of Gujarat. She attended Watford Grammar School for Girls and went on to earn a degree in economics from the University of Keele and an MSc in politics from the University of Essex.
Political Career
Conservative PartyAfter working as a press officer for the Eurosceptic Referendum Party, Patel joined the Conservative Party in 1997. In 2005, she unsuccessfully contested the North Nottingham seat as a Conservative candidate. In 2010, she was elected as the Member of Parliament for Witham in Essex.
Government Positions
In 2014, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed Patel as Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, responsible for tax policy. In 2015, she was promoted to Employment Minister at the Department for Work and Pensions.
Following the 2016 Brexit referendum, Patel was appointed Secretary of State for International Development under Theresa May's premiership. However, she resigned in 2017 after unauthorized meetings with Israeli officials.
