Jorge Andrade
Jorge Manuel Almeida de Andrade (born April 9, 1978) is a Portuguese former professional footballer who played as a central defender.
Early Career
Andrade began his career in 1997 with Estrela da Amadora. He helped the club achieve a historic 7th-place finish in the Primeira Liga in his debut season. His impressive performances caught the attention of top clubs, leading to his transfer to Porto in 2000.
Porto and Deportivo La Coruña
At Porto, Andrade played a key role in the club's success. However, after the 2002 FIFA World Cup, he made a high-profile move to Deportivo La Coruña for a fee of 12 million euros.
Champions League Controversy
During the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League semi-final against Porto, Andrade was notoriously sent off for kicking Deco. The incident drew significant media attention and raised questions about his temperament.
European Transfer Saga
Following his expulsion from the Champions League, Andrade became a sought-after player for several European giants, including Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona, Valencia, and Inter Milan. Ultimately, he opted to join Juventus in the summer of 2007.
Juventus Tenure and Injuries
Andrade's time at Juventus was marred by injuries. He tore his cruciate ligament in a match against Roma, causing him to miss the entire 2007-08 season. The injury recurred in the autumn of 2008, potentially ending his career. Juventus terminated his contract in April 2009.
International Career
Andrade made his international debut in 2001 and played in two major tournaments for Portugal: the 2002 FIFA World Cup and the 2004 UEFA European Championship. He scored three goals in 50 international appearances.
