Biography of Jorge Paulo Lemann

Jorge Paulo Lemann, a banker and the wealthiest person in Brazil, is ranked as the fifth richest person in the country and 172nd globally. As of 2008, his net worth was estimated at $5.8 billion. Lemann was born in 1939 into a family of Swiss immigrants. In 1961, he graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree and later completed a distance learning program at Harvard Business School.

Founding of Banco Garantia

In 1971, Jorge Paulo Lemann, along with three partners, founded the Brazilian investment bank "Banco Garantia". After the bank experienced a severe bankruptcy, Lemann managed to revitalize it and make it one of the most prestigious and innovative investment banks in the country. The bank is often referred to as the "Brazilian version of Goldman Sachs" by Forbes magazine.

Acquisition of AmBev

Shortly after, Lemann and his partners acquired a controlling stake in a Brazilian brewery, which was renamed "AmBev". In 2003, the conglomerate earned $1.75 billion after tax deductions. AmBev's products dominate nearly 65% of the Brazilian market and 80% of the Argentine market, while also holding a monopolistic position in countries such as Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia.

Mergers and Formation of InBev

In August 2004, Jorge Paulo Lemann's company "AmBev" merged with the largest Belgian enterprise, "Interbrew", and was once again renamed as "InBev". This merger led to the creation of one of the world's largest beer conglomerates. The company's stocks increased by 40% in value throughout 2005. "InBev" has operations in more than 30 countries and its products are sold in over 130 countries, enjoying great popularity.
