Biography of Jorge Walter Barrios
Jorge Walter Barrios is a former Uruguayan football player who played as a midfielder and represented the national team. He began his career at the age of 16 with Montevideo Wanderers in Uruguay. In 1980, he was called up to the Uruguayan national team.
Success at Mundialito
Barrios made a significant impact during the Mundialito tournament held in 1980-81 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first World Cup. He scored the first of two goals against the Brazilian national team, which ultimately led to Uruguay winning the title.
Move to Olympiacos and Greek Championship
In 1985, Barrios was bought by Greek club Olympiacos and helped the team win the Greek championship two years later. During the 1986 World Cup, he played for the Uruguayan national team and captained the team in a match against Scotland.
Stint at Levadiakos and Return to Uruguay
From 1987 to 1991, Barrios played for Greek club Levadiakos when the team was in the top division of the national championship. He then returned to Uruguay in 1992 and, after six years, was called up to the national team again. He played his last four matches for Uruguay, reaching a total of 60 appearances for the national team.
In 1993, Barrios won his first Uruguayan championship with Penarol and later returned to his hometown club, Montevideo Wanderers, where he ended his playing career in 2000. After retiring, Barrios went on to coach Wanderers as well as Greek clubs Doxa Drama, Kavala, Ionikos, and the Cypriot team Olympiakos Nicosia.
Throughout his career, Barrios achieved notable success. He was a winner of the Copa America in 1983, the Golden World Champions Cup (Mundialito) in 1980/81, and the Greek championship in 1986. Additionally, he won the Uruguayan championship in 1993 and the second division championship in Uruguay in 2000.
