Early Career: Finnish PolkasIn the early 1950s, Pertti Ikkala gained recognition for his lively performances of traditional Finnish polkas. His most notable works during this period include "Ievan Polka," "Säkkijörven Polka," "Isä-Matin Polka," and "Juhannus Polka."
Songwriting and Collaborations
Ikkala also composed his own songs, the most famous of which is "Joensuun Elli" (Elli from Joensuu). Written to the lyrics of Eino Kettunen, the song later became popularized by Tapio Rautavaara. Another notable composition, "Hopeahääpäivänä" (Days of the Silver Wedding), was made famous by Erkki Junkkarinen.
Film Appearances
In addition to his music career, Ikkala appeared in several films. His most celebrated role was in the 1951 comedy "Rovaniemen markkinoilla" (At the Market in Rovaniemi), which also featured fellow entertainers Reino Helismaa and Esa Pakarinen. In Timo Koivusalo's biographical film "Joutsen ja kurhi" (The Swan and the Thief), actor Ilkka Koivula portrayed Ikkala.
