Jos van Emden: A Romantic Dutch Cyclist
Early Life and CareerJos van Emden was born on February 18, 1985, in Schiedam, Netherlands. He grew up in the city and later moved to Deventer and Veldwezelt. Van Emden began his cycling career at the age of 14, having previously played football in his hometown. He initially attempted to juggle both disciplines but ultimately chose cycling.
Breakthrough at the Giro d'Italia
Van Emden gained international attention during his fourth Giro d'Italia in 2014. On Stage 19, he stopped mid-race on the 26-kilometer individual time trial to propose to his girlfriend, Kimberly Herpelinck. The 29-year-old Belkin team rider presented Herpelinck with a bouquet of flowers and popped the question. His proposal was met with cheers from the team, who announced, "She said yes! Congratulations!" Van Emden promptly resumed the race after receiving Herpelinck's affirmative response.
Cycling Career
Van Emden had previously participated in the Giro d'Italia in 2009, 2010, and 2011. In 2014, he finished 68th on Stage 19. Van Emden is not the first professional cyclist to propose to his partner during a competition. In 2011, Belgian cyclist Johan Vansummeren proposed to Jasmine Vangrieken after winning the Paris-Roubaix race.
