José Eusebio Caro

Minister, Journalist, Poet

José Eusebio Caro was a prominent Colombian poet, journalist, and political figure. He served as Minister of Finance in 1845 and played a pivotal role in abolishing the tobacco monopoly.

Opposition and Exile

When President López became increasingly authoritarian, Caro joined the opposition. However, he was forced to flee to New York due to political persecution. Despite the distance, his longing for his homeland persisted.

Return and Legacy

After a brief time in exile, Caro returned to Colombia. His death in 1853 became a national tragedy and was deeply mourned by the nation. His collected poems were published in "Poeslas, precedidas de recuerdos necrologicos escritos por D. Pedro Fernandez Madrid y D. Joze-Joaquin Ortez" in Madrid in 1885.
