Early Life and Career

Adrián Escudero García was born in Bernal, Argentina, on September 24, 1942. The nephew of renowned footballer José Muguerza Antioa, young Adrián relocated to Spain with his family at an early age. His footballing career began in 1963 with Sociedad Deportiva Eibar, followed by a stint at Indauchu.

Rise to Stardom with Atlético Madrid

In 1966, Adrián made his debut for Club Atlético de Madrid. His first match came on October 16, 1966, against Las Palmas, resulting in a 2-1 victory for his team. Adrián's exceptional goal-scoring prowess earned him the title of Pichichi, the highest goal-scorer in the Spanish La Liga championship, three times during his tenure with Atlético. However, he shared the distinction with other players: Amador Amando in 1968-69, Luis Aragonés in 1969-70, and Carles Rexach in 1970-71. Notably, Adrián's first Pichichi victory was achieved in a season where he played only 20 matches.

Championships and International Career

Adrián contributed to three La Liga championships and two Copa del Rey victories with Atlético Madrid. In 1973-74, the club reached the final of the European Cup and won the Intercontinental Cup. Representing Spain, Adrián made his debut on October 22, 1967, against Czechoslovakia, scoring a goal in the 2-1 win. He went on to play 18 matches and score 5 goals for his adopted country.

The "Engineer of the Area"

Adrián earned the nickname "Engineer of the Area" due to his exceptional skill in the penalty box and his off-field career as an industrial engineer. He displayed exceptional sportsmanship throughout his career, receiving only one red card.

Later Life and Legacy

A mysterious knee ailment forced Adrián to retire from football in 1977. He played only one match in the 1976-77 championship season. After retiring, he pursued his engineering career. Atlético Madrid organized a farewell match for Adrián on June 1, 1977.
