Early Life and Education

José de Iglesias was a Spanish poet born in Salamanca, Spain. As a student at the University of Salamanca, he cofounded the "Salamanca School" alongside his friend Meléndez and other young writers.

Literary Career

After graduating from university, Iglesias became a parish priest. His early literary works were characterized by satire and graceful verses, influenced by the style of Spanish writer Francisco de Quevedo. Iglesias' "letrillas" (light-hearted lyrical compositions) achieved significant success.

Poetic Style

Iglesias' more serious works, written in the style of his contemporary Meléndez Valdés, were less well received. His poetry often explored themes of love, friendship, and the passage of time.

Legacy

José de Iglesias played a significant role in the development of Spanish literature. His contributions to the "Salamanca School" and his popular "letrillas" left a lasting mark on Spanish poetry.
