Early Life and Club CareerJosé Ángel Iribar, a former Spanish goalkeeper, emerged as one of Europe's finest shot-stoppers during the 1960s and 1970s. Born in 1943, he began his football journey at the young age of 12 with "Salleko."
In 1962, Iribar joined "Athletic Bilbao" for a then-record transfer fee of 1 million pesetas. Although unable to secure a starting spot in his first season, he eventually became the club's undisputed No. 1 goalkeeper. Despite Athletic Bilbao's status outside the Spanish elite, Iribar's contributions earned him two Copa del Rey titles in 1969 and 1973.
International Success
Iribar's brilliance extended to the international stage. He was instrumental in Spain's triumph at the 1964 European Championship, playing every minute of the tournament. The highlight came in the final, where Spain defeated the Soviet Union 2-1. He also represented his country at the 1966 World Cup.
Post-Playing Career
After retiring from playing, Iribar embarked on a successful coaching career. He held various roles within Athletic Bilbao, including assistant manager, reserve team coach, and head coach. Since 1999, he has been a coach for the Basque Country national team, despite its non-FIFA recognition.

Iribar has been an ardent supporter of Basque independence. In 1975, he publicly displayed the illegal Basque flag at a match, marking the flag's first public appearance. His actions drew praise from those seeking Basque autonomy.
