José María Bocanegra: A Multifaceted Mexican Figure
José María Bocanegra was a prominent Mexican who played significant roles in the fields of law, politics, economics, literature, and illustration.
Early Life and Education
Bocanegra was born on May 25, 1787, in Hacienda Trued de la Troje, Aguascalientes. He studied law at the San Ildefonso Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico City, where he became an advocate, economist, and historian.
Political Career
During the waning years of New Spain, Bocanegra served in the Royal Audiencia and was an honorary member of the Colegio de Abogados. He joined the Plan de Iguala and was elected deputy to the Constituent Congress in January 1822, helping to draft the Mexican Constitution of 1824.
On January 26, 1829, he was appointed Minister of Internal and External Affairs. He served in this role under Vicente Guerrero until April 1, 1829.
Presidency
Bocanegra became president on December 18, 1829, and held the office until December 23 of that year. On the night of December 22, Mexican cities revolted in favor of Anastasio Bustamante. Bocanegra surrendered.
Diplomatic Service
He was later appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by Antonio López de Santa Anna, serving in 1841-1842, 1843, and 1844. He held the same position under Nicolás Bravo and Valentín Canalizo.
Later Life and Death
In 1844, Bocanegra retired from politics, devoting himself to his work as an advocate. He died at his home in the village of San Ángel on July 23, 1862, at the age of 75. His remains are interred in the Parroquia de San Ángel church.
Personal Life
Bocanegra was married to María de Jesús Carranza, with whom he had three daughters.
