José Vanzzino: A Uruguayan Football Legend
Early Career and Club SuccessJosé Vanzzino began his professional career in 1911 with the Uruguayan club "Bristol". In 1912, he joined "Nacional" of Montevideo, where he would become a record-breaker. Over the next 19 years, Vanzzino represented Nacional in 420 matches, leading the team to nine Uruguayan championships.
International Glory with Uruguay
Vanzzino made his international debut for Uruguay in 1915. He played a crucial role in the nation's first South American Championship victory in 1916, featuring in the inaugural match against Brazil. In 1917, he repeated his success, helping Uruguay retain the championship.
South American Championships
Vanzzino went on to participate in several more South American Championships, including the 1919 edition, where Uruguay finished second to Brazil. In 1922, he was part of the third-placed Uruguayan team. In 1926, he secured his third South American title, again helping Uruguay triumph. His final international appearance came in the 1927 tournament, where Uruguay placed second to Argentina.
Records and Retirement
Vanzzino's 19-year stint with Nacional is a club record. He played his final game on August 17, 1930, against "Central Español." Despite his prolific career, he never scored a goal for the Uruguayan national team.
