Gisler participated in numerous World Youth Chess Championships, achieving notable results with third-place finishes in 1985 and 1986. His exceptional playing abilities were recognized early on, and he was selected to lead the Austrian team at the Chess Olympiads of 1986, 1988, and 1990.

Gisler consistently performed well in international tournaments. In 1984 and 1987, he claimed top spots in Graz, with 5th-7th and 2nd-7th place finishes, respectively.
