Leading Hungarian Chess Master

In the 1840s, János Szen emerged as one of Hungary's most prominent chess players. As a renowned composer and advocate for Hungarian chess, he played an integral role in the country's chess community.

Prominent Chess Career

Szen's prowess on the chessboard was evident in his participation in the Pest team alongside József Sen and Ignác Löventhal. Together, they triumphed over the Paris chess club in a correspondence match (2:0) from 1842 to 1845.

Political Involvement and Exile

Beyond chess, Szen actively participated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848-1849, which ultimately led to his exile in Turkey. There, he converted to Islam and adopted the name Murad-bey, continuing his passion for chess.

Return to Hungary

In 1868, Szen made his way back to his homeland. As a respected figure in Hungarian chess, he served as Honorary Chairman of the Pest Chess Club, where he shared his expertise with generations of players.
