Early Life and Family
Joseph Robinette "Beau" Biden III was born into a political family in Wilmington, Delaware, on February 3, 1969. He was the eldest son of Joe Biden, who later served as Vice President of the United States, and Neilia Hunter Biden. Tragedy struck the family in 1972 when Beau, his younger brother Hunter, and his mother were involved in a car accident. Beau's mother and younger sister were killed, while he and Hunter survived with serious injuries.
Education and Military Service
Beau attended the Archmere Academy in Wilmington. He then pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he majored in history and political science. After graduating, he earned a law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. Following a brief stint as a law clerk, Beau joined the Delaware Army National Guard in 2003 and served in the Iraq War from 2008 to 2009. At the time of his death, he held the rank of Major.
Legal and Political Career
After his military service, Beau began his legal career as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Delaware. He then became a partner at the Wilmington law firm Bifferato, Gentilotti, Biden & Balick. In 2006, he was elected as Attorney General of Delaware, a position his father had held from 1973 to 2009. As Attorney General, Beau focused on issues such as consumer protection, environmental law, and criminal justice reform.
Personal Life
In 2002, Beau married Hallie Olivere. The couple had two children, a daughter, Natalie, and a son, Hunter. Beau and his family resided in Wilmington, Delaware.
Health and Death
In May 2010, Beau was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor known as glioblastoma. He underwent treatment, including surgery and radiation therapy. Despite his courageous battle against the disease, Beau succumbed to his illness on May 30, 2015.
Legacy
Beau Biden was a dedicated public servant and a beloved member of his community. His contributions to the state of Delaware, his service in the military, and his fight against cancer left a lasting legacy. In 2016, the Beau Biden Foundation was established in his honor to support cancer research and provide assistance to families affected by the disease.
