Joseph Calleia: A Maltese Star in Hollywood

Joseph Calleia was born on August 4, 1897, in the quaint Maltese town of Rabat. His parents, Pascal and Elena, nurtured his musical talent, which led him to embark on a European tour in 1914.

Broadway Debut

In the mid-1920s, Calleia ventured to the United States, making his Broadway debut in 1926. Over the next two decades, he graced the stage in renowned productions such as "Broadway," "The Last Mile," and "Grand Hotel."

Silver Screen Success

In 1931, Calleia signed with MGM Studios, launching an illustrious film career that spanned 57 films. He became renowned for portraying cops and villains in Hollywood westerns and gangster movies. His notable performances included "After the Thin Man" (1936), "Marie Antoinette" (1938), and "Algiers" (1938), for which he received the New York Film Critics Award.

Later Career and Legacy

Calleia also shone in "Juarez" (1939), "The Jungle Book" (1942), "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1943), and "Gilda" (1946). After retiring from acting in 1963, he returned to Malta, where he passed away from a heart attack in 1975.

In 1997, Malta honored Calleia with commemorative postage stamps, and a monument was erected in his hometown of Rabat in 2005. His legacy as a successful Maltese singer and actor continues to inspire generations of entertainers.
