Early Life and InfluencesJoseph Dietzgen was born into a working-class family in Solingen, Germany, in 1828. Despite his humble background, he displayed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Through self-education, he immersed himself in philosophy, economics, and political theory.
Dietzgen's Philosophical Development
Dietzgen's intellectual journey led him to embrace dialectical materialism. He was initially influenced by Ludwig Feuerbach's materialism and atheism. However, after 1867, he came into contact with Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, whose ideas profoundly shaped his thinking.
Political Activism and Marxism
Dietzgen became an ardent supporter of Marxism. He joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany in 1869 and played an active role in the International Working Men's Association. His writings, such as "The Nature of Human Consciousness" (1869), expounded on the principles of historical materialism and class struggle.
Later Life and Legacy
Dietzgen remained a prominent figure in the German and international socialist movements until his death in 1888. His son, Eugen, inherited his philosophical and political legacy and further developed his father's ideas. Dietzgen's contributions to the development of Marxist thought continue to be studied and discussed by scholars and political activists alike.
