Marc Garneau: A Pioneering Canadian Astronaut

Early Life and Education

Marc Garneau was born on February 23, 1949, in Quebec City, Canada. He graduated from the Royal Military College in 1970 with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering Physics. In 1973, he earned a Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology.

Military Service and NASA Selection

Garneau served in the Canadian Forces from 1974 to 1989. In December 1983, he was selected as an astronaut by the Canadian Space Agency. He was also chosen to join NASA's astronaut corps in July 1992.

Space Missions

STS 41-G (October 1984)

Garneau's first space mission was as an Experiment Specialist aboard the Challenger shuttle. The eight-day mission focused on Earth observation.

STS-77 (May 1996)

As a Mission Specialist on the Endeavour shuttle, Garneau participated in experiments conducted in the Spacehab module during this 10-day mission.

STS-97 (December 2000)

Garneau's third spaceflight saw him serving as a Mission Specialist on the Endeavour shuttle. The mission involved delivering supplies to the International Space Station and conducting assembly work.

Awards and Honors

Garneau has received numerous awards for his accomplishments, including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and three NASA Space Flight Medals.

Personal Life

Garneau is married to Pamela Soam and they have three children. He enjoys scuba diving, flying, tennis, and car racing. In 1969 and 1970, he made transatlantic crossings as part of a yacht crew.
