Saint Joseph Gerard: A Missionary Blessing

Early Life and Vocation

Born in 1831, Joseph Gerard joined the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1851. He excelled in languages, becoming proficient in Zulu and Sesotho.

Mission to South Africa

In 1853, Gerard arrived in South Africa, where he began evangelizing among the African population. He was appointed pastor of Pietermaritzburg in 1854.

Mission to the Basotho People

In 1862, Gerard joined Bishop François Allard's mission to the Basotho people. With King Moshoeshoe I's permission, he established Motse-oa-'M'a-Jesu (Village of the Mother of Jesus) in 1864.

Respect Amid Tribal Wars

During inter-tribal conflicts, Gerard remained at the mission, earning the respect of King Moshoeshoe I. In 1875, he founded St. Monica's Mission in Northern Lesotho, expanding his ministry to Basotho in the Orange Free State.

Return to Motse-oa-'M'a-Jesu

Gerard returned to Motse-oa-'M'a-Jesu in 1898, where he stayed until his death in 1914. His tireless missionary work resulted in the majority of Lesotho's population converting to Catholicism.
